Akyemfofo, also known as Saltpond residents, are often mocked by non-natives who say, "Akyemfofo, you are stuck in your town and cannot go to the sea." The Akyemfofo's response is always, "Yes, we are proud Akrakyefo (boastful people)." A boast by Akyemfo natives was and is, "I am from Akyemfo, do not be afraid of any difficulty."

I have heard this saying countless times! I was particularly fond of Akyemfo Mpoano (Akyemfo Beach) when we finally relocated. My favourite spot was the beautiful piece of land, which was a little over two hundred metres from the Catholic Girls' School. There were times I went there alone, especially during my student days. Other times, I went with my "closest pal," Reverend Canon Acquaah Arhin (Retired).

Remember when everyone in Ghana knew that some overseas company was prospecting for oil off the shore of Akyemfo? Sitting on the shore, we could see the stationary ship that we had been told was doing the prospecting. At night, we could see the lights from the same ship. Did any Akyemfo citizen see anyone from that ship come ashore? Did anyone from Akyemfo work offshore on that ship? Nothing worthy of note happened until Dr. Busia became Prime Minister after the overthrow of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, and not long after, Dr. Busia was photographed holding a small beaker of what we were told was crude oil, telling the world that Ghana had discovered oil! Looking back, I am inclined to say that it was a political ploy, a very cynical one devised by Osagyefo's detractors, both at home and abroad.

Akyemfo, Saltpond, is an ancient town in her own right. My recollection will go back more than fifty years, and I will make an attempt to recall what life was like all those years back and the nostalgia that emanated from that era. Undoubtedly, there will be gaps, but if you detect them, please feel free to fill them yourself. You may also want to forgive me and attribute any mistakes to Mpanyinyé (the elders).

It is important to note that "Akyemfo" does not include Nankesedo. No! Nankesedofo will never accept that, never. Thus, "Akyemfo" must not go beyond the bridge that takes one to the Akyemfo Hospital.
